5 Excuses Keeping Women Over 40 Stuck (And What To Do Instead)
Let's be honest—we've all used an excuse or two when it comes to looking after our health and fitness.
The problem is that menopause doesn't pause while we wait for the "perfect" time to start.
Here are five of the most common excuses I hear from women over 40:
1. "I don't have time."
Most women I work with are juggling careers, families, ageing parents, and everything in between. But your health doesn't need hours each day. Even 15-20 minutes of movement can make a huge difference over time.
2. "I'm too tired."
Feeling exhausted is common during perimenopause and menopause. Ironically, regular exercise and better nutrition are some of the most effective ways to improve energy levels.
3. "I'm too old to start now."
This couldn't be further from the truth. Research shows women can build muscle, improve bone density, and increase strength well into their 60s, 70s and beyond.
4. "I've tried before and failed."
You haven't failed. You simply haven't found an approach that fits your current lifestyle and stage of life. What worked in your 20s probably won't work now—and that's okay.
5. "I'll start when life calms down."
Life rarely calms down. There will always be work deadlines, family commitments, holidays, and unexpected challenges. The best time to start is with the life you have right now.
The truth?
You don't need perfection.
You don't need to overhaul your entire life.
You just need to take the next small step.
A short walk.
An extra serving of protein.
A strength workout.
An earlier bedtime.
Small actions repeated consistently will always beat waiting for the perfect moment.
